She emphasized the importance of collaboration between Con-Ed, NYISO, and New York City leaders to encourage large consumers to switch to alternative fuel sources, thereby reducing their energy consumption. Hochul also called upon New Yorkers to take individual responsibility by conserving electricity through simple actions such as setting air conditioning units between 75-78 degrees and avoiding unnecessary appliance usage.
The impact of these measures is evident in the Williamsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, where some residents experienced power outages. Drivers had to navigate through an intersection without power, highlighting the challenges posed by the voltage reduction and conservation requests. It's worth noting that over half of the reported power outages are concentrated in the Bronx, underscoring the region's vulnerability.
Con Edison's instructions to customers are clear and specific. They are advised to refrain from using energy-intensive appliances like washers, dryers, and microwaves until the repairs are completed. Air conditioning usage should be limited, with the suggestion to operate only one unit and set it to the highest comfortable temperature. Additionally, electric vehicle charging should be avoided unless absolutely necessary during the repair period.
